ABSTRACT

Archaeology has, in fact, been very slow to adopt even the simplest standards of recovery, a point which will puzzle any worker familiar with the methodology of any science. Archaeozoology, as a title for the study of archaeological bone samples is clearly inappropriate, and establishes quite the wrong order of priorities. The term means little more than 'old zoology' and there is already an adequate word for this in Palaeontology. Many scientists have turned to archaeology as a source of research data, and a number of degree courses around this theme. Archaeology is a record of the human past and those who work on archaeological data are, from necessity, required to produce archaeologically relevant results. The journals of science are open to many publications derived from the study of archaeological materials, but of lesser archaeological relevance. There are workers in the field trained in zoology, veterinary medicine, medical practice and even in archaeology.
