ABSTRACT

I want to go back to talking about the days of the excavation team. The evenings are really nice at Çatalhöyük. Especially the Thursday evenings.... Since Friday is the day off, we gather together on Thursday evenings, sitting by the fire, drinking our beers and dancing. The next day some of the team stay at the excavation house, while others go to Konya for a day trip. I always had a great time with these people and never wanted them to leave. Therefore I tried to be with them as much as I could before they left. I was also impressed by some of them. For instance, one of my friends would always read a book in tea break during the work week. I would have thought that he would be tired, just wanting to drink some tea and relax, but no. He would read his book as if someone was going to take it from him. I also want to mention something about our director, Ian Hodder. One morning, I was sitting outside my house when Ian was coming down the mound. He was collecting the rubbish he saw along his way. He greeted me, threw the rubbish away, and carried on his way. I felt respect for him since he was contributing to keeping our environment clean even though he was our professor. I walk on the same path almost every day, but I have never collected the rubbish. I thought that it wasn't my job. As a result of Ian's behavior, I realized my ignorance and started collecting the rubbish. But then my behavior affected Ian, since there was no rubbish left for him to pick up. I was doing some cleaning on the site anyway, but it wouldn't be every day- Now, whenever I go up to the site, I collect the rubbish. This made my work easier, so that I didn't have to go up to the mound during the cleaning hours. 1
