ABSTRACT

One of the main themes at the Conference, in fact the main theme of the Conference, was The Assemblage. The general subject of discussion was the assemblage of pots from an area or a site. It is just possible that a military assemblage, as defined in Germany, will also be found in Richborough, Reculver and Corbridge, but not in Lullingstone Villa, Chedworth Villa, Cirencester, Verulamium or Bath. There is no doubt at all that medieval assemblages are different from Roman assemblages so far as wares represented go. One site which was much quoted was Portchester, very rightly since Mike Fulford's pottery report is perhaps the first large-scale modern pot report to be published with any attempt at completeness. It is therefore a reasonable assumption that Portchester is one of that system with a garrison. It was equally reasonable, before the era of space craft, to assume that the moon was made of green cheese.
