chapter  5
Conclusion: Exercising the Poetry Muscle
Pages 16

The possibilities of poetry for social researchers lie in our abilities and motivations to further poetic craft as method. This means studying poetic craft and form, developing artistic discipline, and understanding poetic inspiration as well as artistic processes of research, revision, and critique which are similar tasks for researchers learning social science research methods and epistemological positions (Dunlop, 2007). This book has addressed these issues of the use, craft, and practice of research poetry through an explicit discussion of the process of its construction, goals for its use, aesthetic concerns, and criteria for good and effective research poetry. This final chapter acts as a heuristic offering questions and challenges for poet-researchers to consider, along with a focus on poetic inspiration through the use of writing exercises intended to exercise the poetry muscle.
