chapter  3
Concern with Craft: The Question of Poetic Criteria
Pages 22

In this chapter, I argue for the importance of criteria for research poetry, and perhaps more importantly, I argue for the necessity of a willingness to engage in conversation about the creation and use of criteria. I offer two ways that may help us evaluate the merits of research poetry, the use of ars poetica (i.e., the art of poetry) and poetic criteria. Specifically, I present a discussion of the function and utility of ars poetica for poetic craft, a means of articulating one’s own ars poetica, examples of some poets’ conceptualizations of poetry, and the implications of ars poetica as poetic and artistic criteria. In addition, I demonstrate how three versions of my own ars poetica written at different times may be used as criteria for assessing research poetry.
