ABSTRACT

Gergen Mary feminist and constructionist leanings have fostered a critical view of the empiricist tradition in the social sciences. So often, it seems, empiricist methods function as impersonal, mechanical devices that force people into categories largely irrelevant to life as they understand and live it. One answer is to explore the age-old practice of cartooning. Critique with a light touch. So, Mary tried his hand at several critical cartoons. One thing Mary especially liked about them was their capacity to communicate in a flash the essentials of an argument that might take pages to unfold. And they might simultaneously evoke a giggle and a nod. Gergen Mary son-in-law, Lee Bell, contributed to the images with his skillful renditions of his humble characters.
