Catherine Besteman Ethnography of an Ethnographic Somali Photography Archive in Maine

During 1987 and 1988, I lived in Banta, Somalia, with my photographer husband, Jorge Acero, to carry out ethnographic fieldwork for my dissertation. During our stay we created a collection of about a thousand photographs that captured quotidian village activities: nomadic pastoralists migrating in the bush outside the village with their large herds, ritual life, landscapes, and more than a hundred formal portraits requested by friends and neighbors.
