ABSTRACT

Olga Tufnell has a special place among Palestinian archaeologists because it was she who salvaged most of the Lachish excavation reports after the death of James L Starkey, Director of the Wellcome-Marston Archaeological Research Expedition. In articles about Lachish, as in the interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible, volume 3, for instance, the Director gets credit for information in the articles, but an examination of the bibliography shows that Olga Tufnell really produced most of the reports from which the information is taken. 1 Those of us who work with excavation reports, therefore, are indebted to her in a unique way for her unassuming contributions in the field of archaeology, and I take great pleasure in contributing to this Festschrift honoring her achievements.
