ABSTRACT

Over the last few years I have had the privilege of working for Olga Tufnell on her volume of Studies on scarab Seals. I am grateful to her for her affection, courage, enthusiasm, perseverance and thorough scholarship which have been such an example to me. The present study has, as its starting point, a cylinder seal from Tell el-Ajjul – a site Miss Tufnell excavated with Petrie, and the stratigraphy of which she has done much to elucidate since its scarabs form an important section of her book.
