ABSTRACT

As early as 1932 Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Pei Wenzhong pointed out, in relation to their analysis of the stone artifacts from the Middle Pleistocene Locality 1 deposits, “the Choukoutien [Zhoukoudian] industry, by its association of choppers and an almost microlithic industry, represents a very characteristic culture type, so far unique in China” (1932:354).
