ABSTRACT

Although the first unquestionable Palaeolithic artifacts to be brought to light in China were those found by Emile Licent in the Qingyang region of eastern Gansu as early as 1920 (Teilhard and Licent 1924; Xie and Zhang 1977), the Pleistocene prehistory of China’s steppe and desert provinces northwest of approximately 35°N and 110°E is still poorly understood.
