ABSTRACT

On the fourth night of his first major assignment, Sato Yoshimasa was alone and miserable in a dark hotel room. Looking back over the events of the recent days or ahead to the challenges before him, he could see only failure. Vital pieces of his equipment had been lost and he was mystified by his surroundings. His attempts to begin the operation had been embarrassing failures. He had told himself and his employer that his bodily control was so extensive that traveling halfway around the world would require no adjustment, but he felt miserable. He was sleepy whenever he was awake and awake whenever he tried to sleep. His bowels were loose and rumbled constantly. He was always flushed and sweaty and sure he had a fever. Had he been at home, he would have visited his doctor days ago.
