ABSTRACT

T o anyone with the faintest prejudice against America or museum education, The Art Museum as Educator must appear at first glance to confirm their worst suspicions. Here is a large and very heavy volume, apparently a cross between a concise encyclopedia and the most lavish and tedious of company reports. A quick flick through reveals a double column lay-out with two-colour printing and sub-headings in bold type announcing “The arts awareness theory of non-verbal learning,” “How an aesthetic education curriculum package is devel oped,” “The school in the Exploratorium,” “Making and merchandising the Impressionist packages.” There are few illustrations to divert or distract and what photographs there are convey a strong sense of deja vu.
