ABSTRACT

For a very long time, the word “hazing” seems to have had a particular resonance with reference to military schools that it lacks elsewhere, even though it is a pervasive element in society at all levels, in all activities, and probably existed before recorded history. That it exists primarily, or more dramatically, among males possibly accounts for alertness to a greater tendency for it to be manifest within closed male societies, of which there are far more than closed female societies.
