ABSTRACT

Bison, cattle, sheep and goats are all very similar in the form of their teeth. Cattle and bison can be distinguished from the small bovids by their size. Payne (1985) has sug gested some differences between sheep and goat in the lower deciduous third and fourth premolars, and permanent first molar. Cervid cheek teeth are distinguished from bovid by their lower and generally less robust crowns, by their pronounced cervical bulge, by the sharpness and divergence of the accessory pillars on their vestibular side, and by the reduction in the accessory cusp on the lingual side in upper molars and vestibular side in lower molars. The different cervids are difficult to distinguish from one another in their teeth.
