Neck of ilium • The neck is broad dorsal-ventral, but very short caudal-cranial and surmounted by a massive, curved, spreading iliac crest; hu­ man. • The neck is long caudal-cranial, quite broad dorsal-ventral (relative to acetabulum size), with a flattened section and surmounted by a narrow iliac crest; dog, cat (in the cat the crest is little broader than the neck). • The neck is long caudal-cranial, slender dorsal-ventral (relative to acetabulum size), with an oval section and surmounted by flaring wings of iliac crest; horse, bovids, cervids, pig. • In cervids, the neck is slightly more slender relative to its length than in bovids. • In the pig, the neck bears a prominent ridge, giving it a 'D'-shaped section.
