ABSTRACT

The panel in the portrait of a woman is split by major fissures running from the upper and lower edges; several small particles of paint are lost. Four nail holes survive at the corners of the panel about 1.5 cm from the edge of the painting and about 2.5 cm from the edge of the panel. The hole at the upper left-hand corner falls within a broken edge of the panel; the upper corners are barely and roughly cut. The panel has suffered two vertical fissures and several small cracks along the lower edge; towards the left side a piece is lost. The wax was perhaps melted and another coat applied. The edges of the panel are strongly marked and hard to read. The panel is broken across the base and split from the centre of the base up to the brow of the figure. The painted surface is cracked in several places and small areas are lost at the top of the panel.
