ABSTRACT

The paintings reproduced on the following pages reflect the multi-faceted palette of Leona Wood. Each genre includes works that bring to mind the many artists who had won her admiration. The Orientalist paintings reveal the neoclassical influence of Ingres and David, while in the allegorical works, as well as some of the nudes, we see elements of Balthus and De Chirico. Her highly varnished still lifes are reminiscent of Caravaggio and Zubarán, and several of the portraits suggest Piero della Francesca. An impressive series of masquers in the Piazza San Marco are a tribute to Pietro Longhi.
