ABSTRACT

Seven advisors participated in the Excellent Judges project during the 18 months of the National Science Foundation funding. Each advisor was selected for different strengths–experience with exhibit development, science teaching in informal settings, visitor studies, and previous experience with working on NSF projects. Two advisors–Sue Allen and Joshua Gutwill–had several things in common: They both had been students at the University of California at Berkeley and had experience with educational researcher John R. Frederiksen, and they both had worked in the department of visitor research and evaluation at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, a hotbed of visitor studies for the past 10 years.
