ABSTRACT

I flew away to Green Valley as one way to escape the anxiety of being hostage. I found Jade at Carver’s workshop, turning over polished jades in her hands. As the apprentices in Carver’s workshop learned their craft, their designs became more intricate. Carver himself became more skilled, too, creating more ways to make the jades beautiful. He invented a rotary drill, to make circles better, and perfected the ox-nose perforation for hanging jades from the back without making a hole in the front. On another trip to Jade Village, he found some beach sand with exactly the right hardness to carve the jades. He made lines of different depths to indicate features of the birds and animals, which made the jades shimmer all the more.
