ABSTRACT

The Dutch Foundation for Experimental and Educational Archaeology, founded by members of the R. O. B. (State Service for Archaeology) and R. M. O. (National Museum of Antiquities, Leiden), cooperated with interested third parties in the formulation of a plan for a national archaeological park in the Netherlands. Environmental archaeology deals with man's behaviour; it is related to the findings of archaeological research and focuses on environmental aspects. The prehistoric displays in "Archeon" will be made up of examples from the east and south of the country - areas characterised by pleistocene sands or loess plateaux. Because of the peat present in the whole area to be covered by "Archeon", it was decided to build most of the Roman period and the middle Ages in "low" Holland. There will be settlements and cemeteries from prehistoric times; a town, a fort and a harbour from the Roman period; and settlements and castles from the medieval period.
