ABSTRACT

People have continued to make racially insensitive remarks and operate on faulty stereotypes. To understand the heterogeneity of Asian American identities and to challenge the assumption that people of Asian descent are perpetual foreigners in the United States. In elementary school, some kids would grotesquely slant their eyes at me and recite anti-Asian chants. Older kids made crude comments that sexually objectified Asian women. Instead of attempting to hide identity, the author refocused energies on learning about ethnic background and the racialization of Asian Americans. He enrolled in undergraduate and graduate courses that explored key topics like stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, and social identities. Sometimes, people aren't aware of common Asian American stereotypes. As an educator, friend, Hoosier, and Japanese American, he feels responsible for teaching others about the multiplicity of Asian American identities, histories, cultures, and perspectives and to help those who are dealing with discrimination.
