In contrast to structural-functionalism, materialist research programs assume that cultures are best understood in terms of conicts between social groups, such as classes or families, over access to resources such as clean water, arable land, and raw materials for technology and construction. e dominant research program in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s was the Boasian research program (chapter 4), sometimes called historical particularism.
