ABSTRACT
Overview Nonstates and states have historically impacted local environments in dissimilar ways. Nonstate societies sometimes decrease and sometimes increase diversity in their local environments. States have intense impacts on the environment because the food production method-intensive or industrial agriculture-involves a large energy investment in relation to the land area cultivated. In contrast, extensive agriculture has less impact because it uses sunlight and human and animal muscle power.
