ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the structures and methods of using e-learning as complementary to face-to-face studies. E-learning is one form of distance learning, which can refer to different kinds of tools, from regular postal mail to broadcast and mobile learning. The communication technologies used in e-learning can be categorised as asynchronous or synchronous. The documentation of industrial sites and production processes must be done on site, but on-line methods and tools can be beneficially exploited in training and education when direct physical connection with the study object is not essential. The Finnish University Network for the History of Science and Technology called Torus was a joint effort of a number of Finnish universities to deliver education by e-learning methods. The industrial heritage course of the Torus network was carried out by a group of three teachers of which the leading teacher was responsible for the whole course, while the assisting teachers only for their own lectures.
