ABSTRACT
On December 22, 2006, an Oxfam outpost in Darfur, Sudan, was attacked. No one was killed; the targets were vehicles. A staff member interviewed on National Public Radio said that a dozen vehicles were stolen or destroyed,
and that-with no end to the violence in sight-chances for improvement
in the humanitarian situation were bleak. Shortly before this, one of our col-
leagues on assignment in Darfur had reported to us on her discouragement
regarding issues of gender violence at the hands of janjaweed militia.
