ABSTRACT
The following position statement is drawn not only from our academic experiences but also from decades of fieldwork and humanitarian activity in both remote and proximate areas. It also is drawn “from the gut.” We believe
in a pragmatic humanitarianism that is carried out on site, when necessary in
the toughest of conditions outside the Green Zone. Civilian personnel, includ-
ing social scientists, often are required to work alongside military personnel.
