ABSTRACT
Military bases and camps serve as the central stations/platforms for both training activities and military operations, at home and abroad. So-called fixed sites can be understood from both logistical/strategic and soci-
ological/tactical perspectives. This chapter provides a brief overview of several
types of sites. A special civilian-military training site, established in Romania
in 2004, also is featured. Modern-day Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT)
sites, as they have been implemented since 2002, are an interesting combination
of military bases and encampments. To some extent they also incorporate fea-
tures of formidable fortresses needed to protect foreigners and locals alike in
nonpermissive and semipermissive areas of reconstruction and development,
some associated with humanitarian interventions.
