Carrying capacity The maximum number of individuals supported on a given amount of land during the most unfavorable season of year, without causing deterioration of the locality.

Chiefdom A complex society with an important leader with unusual ritual, political, or entrepreneurial skills. Chiefdoms tend to be kin-based but hierarchical, with power concentrated in the hands of powerful leaders who are responsible for the redistribution of resources. In large chiefdoms the leader may exercise considerable power.
