ABSTRACT

George S. Smith is a Registered Professional Archaeologist and former Associate Director at the Southeast Archeological Center, Tallahassee, Florida, United States. He taught public archaeology at Florida State University for ten years and has served on the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) Public Education Committee as well as on the Board of Directors and co-chaired the SAA Task Force on Curriculum, which received a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to enhance the undergraduate curriculum in archaeology. In addition to numerous journal articles and reports, he has co-edited the books Protecting the Past (1991); Teaching Archaeology in the 21st Century (2000); and Cultural Heritage Management: A Global Perspective (in press). He participated in the international workshop Interrogating Pedagogies: Archaeology in Higher Education and helped organize several international workshops dealing with heritage management and values. He received the 2007 SAA award for Excellence in Cultural Resource Management and is cochair of the SAA Heritage Values Interest Group.
