ABSTRACT

This chapter examines anthropological research that improves mental health services for people diagnosed with serious mental illnesses in low-resource settings in the United States, where he have been conducting research for the past decade. In this work, he has been primarily interested in a new model of mental health services a peer-provided care model. Peer-provided care is offered by peers. A recent report suggested that a peer is "one who has at some time been disrupted or disabled by a psychiatric, trauma, or substance use condition and as a result has lived experience'" with such challenges as a determination by others that one lacks competency. Jeremy was 27 when he jumped out of the window. Jeremy was a prominent member of this community, but he was not the patient. He was a licensed clinical psychologist. Jeremy held a PhD and provided psychotherapy to his clients. Jeremy also advocates for his clients to take medication.
