Ethical Issues in Interviewing

In this chapter I begin by returning to the concept of vulnerability, which I introduced earlier, and expand its meaning based on the work of Fisher (2006). I then provide an overview of the consent process and address the special issues related to consent that must be considered when planning to conduct a qualitative study that includes interviews. In the second part of the chapter, I discuss potential tensions between the boundaries around the research study and the boundaries around other roles the researcher may have based on his or her discipline or profession.
