Gubrium and Holstein (2001) note that society has come a long way since the days when the voice of the individual did not matter. Now society seems increasingly interested in knowing what people think, so much so that Atkinson and Silverman (1997) have suggested that we live in an interview society where every day brings new information about experiences through interviews found on talk shows and in newspapers, magazines, books, and movies.
