ABSTRACT

In 2011, the American Alliance of Museums launched an exploratory expedition into the world of food, led by AAM’s Center for the Future of Museums. Many museums enthusiastically signed on for the trek. Others regarded the invitation with bafflement and asked, in effect, “Why food?” This article shares examples of ways that museums are engaging with their communities and their own operations around food and food issues, particularly around the themes of education, food services, and food as connector. The article shares a number of lessons and sage advice from museums across the country exploring the place of food in advancing the mission of museums.
