ABSTRACT

Two of the most important and complicated puzzles humans face can be stated in two quite simple questions: Why are we the way we are? Why are some of us diff erent? ese may seem like straightforward questions, but the answers are neither singular nor simple. Begin to brainstorm about fl avor preference, sexual orientation, or intellectual capacity, for example, and you will fi nd that what comes to mind are both biological and cultural explanations. Moreover, most groups will split into two camps in regard to the explanations, with one side favoring biology and the other on the side of culture. Which camp is right? Is it our biological nature or is it the fact of having been nurtured in a particular culture that determines how we act, respond, think, move, and feel?
