ABSTRACT

The director, or possibly the editor, can review the interview and B-roll footage. During this process, the director and/or editor might invite the documentary project archaeologist to participate in logging footage and then in rewriting the script to include interviews and narration. Essentially, there are two ways that a documentary team can approach logging footage. One is to review all video and log it that is, on computer or on a sheet of paper, people note the time code, description, and possibly even comments on each footage segment. The other approach, taken by some directors and editors, is to discard bad footage and keep and log only video clips of interviews and B-roll that are deemed useful for possible inclusion into the documentary. The editing script format we use has two columns, with the video and other visuals described on the left side of the sheet and the audio text on the right.
