ABSTRACT

Some archaeology, anthropology, and history-related documentaries might use reenactments, sometimes called 're-creations', in place of standard B-roll. There are some standard approaches that we all have seen employed many times, such as showing several seconds of B-roll of soldiers' boots as they march. This chapter discusses a military flag blowing in the wind with gun and cannon smoke engulfing it, or a closeup of a single soldier loading his musket and showing his determined and fatigued face. The historically accurate watercraft held reenactors who portrayed privateers bringing ashore some of the captured goods from the brig Jefferson Davis after it grounded and was abandoned off St. Augustine in August 1861. The chapter provides suggestions for shooting historical reenactments: for filming a reenactment of a battle scene, first check with the local law enforcement agency to make sure that discharging a replica weapon is permitted.
