ABSTRACT

Still photographs, whether old time or modern day, are frequently used by experienced documentary filmmakers. Vertical photographs can be utilized, but during postproduction, the editor may have to use only part of an image or create an insert, like a picture within a picture, which is essentially a small image inserted over the master shot, usually in an upper corner. For historic archaeologist there are many repositories where photographs, illustrations, postcards, and maps can be found that might be suitable for incorporation into their documentary. Historic maps and maps created using Photoshop and other software are often incorporated into archaeology and history documentaries. An imagery technique used by both documentarians and movie filmmakers that has certainly seen a rapid rise in its application is computer-generated animation. There are many different types of 2-D and 3-D computer animation techniques and styles, from graphic animation to photorealistic and beyond.
