ABSTRACT

Most experienced archaeologists probably have at least once in their professional career imagined being involved in a documentary film on their favorite archaeology project. Although every documentary is unique, they all start with the idea, also frequently called the "concept". Documentary filmmaker and author Barry Hampe, in his book Making Documentary Films and Videos: A Practical Guide to Planning, Filming, and Editing Documentaries, claims that people should be able "to state the concept in not more than a hundred words". The research team followed up the documentary idea with a multiple-page outline for the documentary, and Zarzynski presented it to Peter Pepe, owner and director of Pepe Productions, an established local video production corporation whose studio was only a few miles from Lake George. At Pepe Productions, we have a mantra to describe our documentary filmmaking: their documentary idea must be an incredible tale just waiting to be told.
