ABSTRACT

Movie trailers are so popular with the public nowadays that some cable television networks offer movie trailers on demand. Trailers are designed to persuade viewers to purchase a ticket to gain entry into a theater, to turn on one's television to watch a documentary, to buy the DVD documentary, or to download the documentary to watch the full feature on one's computer. Many documentarians create several trailers, of varying lengths, for a single documentary, each version customized to fit the profile of the intended viewing group. There is even an Oscar-or Emmy-type competition for movie and documentary trailers, called the Golden Trailer Awards. If director's documentary filmmaking team succeeds in fashioning a noteworthy trailer, ask the producer or director to consider entering it into the Golden Trailer Awards competition. The archaeologist on the team should work with the director and editor to produce a masterful trailer, one that persuades viewers of all ages to want to watch their archaeology documentary.
