ABSTRACT

WHY DO YOU WANT TO DO IT? Research begins with conscious re ection and the asking of questions. Spend some time now just thinking why you want to do some research.

‘What made me think I should do some research?’ ‘Why do we want to do some research?’ • People are disagreeing strongly about some course of action, program or issue. • Something is crying out as a known problem to be solved. • There’s a threat to something we want to keep, and we need to be able to say what we’ve

observed that is evidence of its value. • We just have a feeling that something’s not as good as it could be. • We collect a lot of statistics and wonder whether they could tell us more. • Everyone else is looking at such and such and I thought it might be worth looking at

it too. • I desperately need some information to reach a particular decision. • Complaints have been received about the way we work.
