ABSTRACT

In semiotic theory, an icon is something that conveys meaning by resembling something else. C. S. Peirce had a trichotomy involving three ways that meaning is generated: by icons (resemblance), indexes (cause and effect), and symbols (must be learned). In recent years, the term “iconic” has become very popular and is used to describe something or someone that is extraordinary or exemplary. A product that has become “iconic” is one that has achieved widespread attention and notoriety. Some “iconic” products would be the Apple iPhone, Levi‧s jeans, Coca-Cola, and the “Big Mac.” You can find lists of other iconic products on Google, itself an icon.
