ABSTRACT

Writing in the early 1920s, A. L. Kroeber commented on the “transition” to fully modern humankind 1 as follows:

The Lower Paleolithic culture, at least in its latest form, was carried by Neanderthal man; Upper Paleolithic culture is in great part associated with Cro-Magnon man, whose anatomy was nearer our own. Did not this relatively modern structure involve also a relatively modern set of mental faculties, and these in turn, by their own sheer worth, produce the richer culture? (Kroeber 1923:396)
