ABSTRACT

Why did Kathleen go to Jerusalem in 1961? She had completed the Jericho excavations a mere three years before. Years of writing up the results lay ahead;only the first Jericho volume had seen the light of day. She still had the final report on Sabratha to finish. Even her great friend Doug Tushingham conceded that many thought her decision to move on to Jerusalem “foolhardy, perhaps even quixotic.” 1 She herself admitted it might have been wiser to have waited at least seven years after Jericho rather than only three. 2 Why then, so soon after finishing one large excavation, did she begin work at what has been described as “undoubtedly the most difficult site in [Palestine] to excavate”? 3
