The Core Counter-Narrative

This book would be incomplete without offering a core counter-narrative. Originally I had not intended to draft one, but my wife-an excellent editor and collaborator-reached the end of the previous chapter, and in a fit of exasperation, told me flat out that I was letting readers down without one. “But who am I to suggest America’s story?” I complained. “I’m not the president. I’m not an elected leader. I’m just an ordinary guy, a khaki-pants-and-blue-shirt-wearing teacher and scholar with some progressive ideas.”
