ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on one of the qualitative communication scholar: Chris Poulos who represent the full range of qualitative communication research: social science, narrative, and performance. Through interviews and reflective assessment of his key articles make visible how they deal with theory, data collection, analysis, and writing up a study. The chapter discusses how they make critical decisions in the process of conducting research. The back story is Chris was nearly denied tenure because his method of research narrative writing was considered by some in his department and university to not be scholarship. Chris explains that the action of transgressing or passing beyond the bounds of legality or right; a violation of law, duty, or command; disobedience, trespass, sin. Chris gestures with his hand as he talks about his investigation that way of investigating the phenomenon of what it means to be a human being and attempting to craft an evocative, compelling, engaging, life-changing narrative.
