ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Applied Communication Division of NCA awarded their 2012 Bill Eadie Distinguished Award for a Scholarly Article to Sarah Tracy and Kendra Dyanne Rivera's 2010 article in Management Communication Quarterly, 'Endorsing Equity and Applauding Stay-at-Home Moms: How Male Voices on Work-Life Reveal Aversive Sexism and Flickers of Transformation'. It summarizes author's conversation with Sarah Tracy about this article. The article that is the subject of the chapter combines the contexts of home and the workplace to look at how male executives talk about women's work-life experiences. The chapter illustrates the importance of careful planning of data collection, systematic coding and analysis of the data, and the use of theory to explain the findings in a way that makes them relevant and useful to address real-world issues. Tracy and Rivera's groundbreaking research on men's viewpoints of women's work-life balance is a collaborative effort that combines theory and praxis to open up possibilities in workplace discourse around gender norms.
