In early times in Japan, bamboo and paper lanterns were used with candles inside. A blind man visiting a friend one night was offered a lantern to guide him home. “I do not need a lantern. Darkness or light is the same to me.” His friend said, “Yes, I know, but if you do not have a lantern, someone may run into you.” The blind man started off with the lantern. Just then someone ran into him. “Watch where you are going! Can’t you see this lantern?” To this, the man replied, “Brother, your candle has burned out.”
