ABSTRACT

A tower of monitors with a sweep of choreographed images depicts the history of music videos; 1 a living diorama shows Native Americans encamped on the plains; 2 the entire dramatic arc of the Civil War unfolds in just four minutes. 3 Why is it that so many memorable experiences in history museums are created by media installations? This chapter explores electronic media in many forms—from large screen theaters to interactive computers, ambient audio to object theater, audio, video, computers, and networks creating visitor directed experiences or fixed, unchanging parts of an exhibition setting.
