ABSTRACT

Thus, some societies, and some regions of the world, have saved their environments fairly well. Others have devastated theirs, and often without economic development to show for it. Some, like the Maya and many Southeast Asians, have preserved a rural unity, with forest, field, and garden worked into one sustainable system. Others, like many Mediterranean farmers, have managed farmlands well but not cared much for forests. Still others have found yet other accommodations. Some, like Indonesia, have changed from good management to devastation, without much benefit to the vast majority of the people.
